Improving Office Life through Activities Outside of the Office

posted on 13 May 2012 in Business and Finance

The office environment can be a very oppressive one with little positive human interaction. Everyone has a job to do. Be it in front of a computer screen, making a presentation or writing on paper, office staff often face monotonous and solitary work day to day. Having been on a leadership development programme, I can see so many ways in which this kind of working life can be improved. The running of the office is optimized for efficiency, however, efforts should and can be made to improve the environment in the office for all the staff by initiating a programme of activities outside the often dreary office hours. Social events that take place out of office hours should become an integral part of the office working experience. An evening out (a meal, drinks, arcade etc.) should be organised weekly or even once every other week if that is more appropriate. On rarer occasions even a weekend away would be an option. The simple purpose of these activities is for the staff to interact together in a more natural and open environment that will promote relaxation and the formation of new friendships. Staff will get to know each other better and the point is that all this can then be applied to the office space. Staff will be more comfortable with each other, have a better understanding of each other as well as being more confident in communicating. This will inevitably contribute to a more pleasant and productive office atmosphere and it will also help the overall cohesion and productivity of the office working environment.

Spreading the Plague: Opheliac

posted on 12 May 2012 in Arts and Entertainment

Pretty much everyone has some level of knowledge when it comes to classical and electronic music but how many people have met a fusion of both? The certain album which I am describing is a mixture of industrial music and classical music creatively named ''victoriandustrial'' by its creator. Emilie Autumn is that particular person and she has released her album Opheliac a few years ago and it is definitely one of the best works I have heard in the last several years - and working for a recording studio builders, I'm in awe of its slick engineering. The whole theme which the album is built upon is 19th century asylums, human cruelty, medical experiments, psychology and of course, her signature animals - rats. While the album has it's music wrapped around that theme Emilie Autumn also used several Shakespearean works as a base for developing a song. The album's name is actually derived from Ophelia, a character in one of Shakespeare's best works - Hamlet. Opheliac means a self destructive person which is obsessed with someone else who doesn't acknowledge or love them as much as they love that certain person and they will do anything and everything to gain that. The album perfectly and vividly captures every aspect of the said term. What is also stunning about this album is how several songs have a quite uplifting tune and vocals, but the lyrics hide the true meaning of the song which is often acting happy because it is expected of you and sacrificing yourself for the sake of others and somehow being selfish at the same time. All in all this has to be one of the best works in the history of modern music and it does't use the cliches which are met very often in today's music industry.

Email Marketing Is a Win-Win Situation in the Business World

posted on 11 May 2012 in Internet Related

Marketing has taken a whole new direction over the past ten years - working for an email marketing consultancy, I should know that more than anyone else. From the old-school door to door salesman to the new internet based marketing strategies, technology has played a major role in this ever-changing business. One great way to target a specific market is through email. This is a wonderful, convenient, and economical way to reach potential clients. Most clients have access to email and will be able to read and reply to email marketing on their own terms. It is not disruptive as the old door to door sales techniques are. It is very economical as you are not paying for envelopes, paper supplies, and postage for mass amounts of mail. You are also saving time as you are able to email multiple people at once from one location. It also provides you with the opportunity to target a specific audience. For example, you may wish to direct your mailings to a certain sector of the business market and exclude those who your product or service would not benefit. All in all, email marketing has opened up a whole new way to market in the business world.

I Do, I Don't, or Totally Confused Which is It?

I was in college at the time I met my husband. We actually met at work. I had already gotten my associates degree and was working on my bachelors. I had a 5yr old daughter and was pregnant with my second child. I met peter about a month or two before I went on maternity leave we were just friends. I used to see him in my peripheral vision staring at my legs. While I was away I thought about him a lot. I thought to myself is this a sign? I hardly know the man how can I miss him so. About 4 weeks after I had my son I saw him at the park we exchanged numbers and that's how it all began.

We began to date.

After I got to know him a little I realized He was a good man not like the other men I have come across. That's when my mind got to going. I began to think hhhmmmmm I already have two kids this man loves me and I like him. I can't let this one get away I'll fall in love with him later I'm sure. He told me he will only marry me if I loved him and of course I said I love you.

That was not the truth.

We began to date in August of 2000, with diamonds on my finger (engagement ring) by December 2001, and we were married by May of 2001 at a lovely wedding venue in Leicestershire.

Yes we are still married but it has been a very very hard road. I do love him but I still have not fallen in love with him after almost 10 years. What a terrible thing I have done He deserves to be with somebody who can return his love and love him the way a wife should love her husband. In case your wondering He knows about everything. I told him the first week after we were married.

Forgetting About Money Makes Me Richer

posted on 8 May 2012 in Business and Finance

I have a unique way of making sure that I am never short of cash. Having moved quite a lot in the past few years, I have opened more bank accounts than I actually need: current accounts, savings, life insurance, stocks. As none of these accounts have running costs of any sort, I don’t mind keeping them open. I should probably close most of them, except they are good for at least for one thing: to hide money from myself. I've sought personal financial management advice and yet I think the simplest way to manage your money is to forget about it. Every now and then when there is some money left at the end of the month, I put it in one of my former accounts and quite quickly forget about. Then, months or even years later I stumble upon my reserves again. So when this happens, I like to indulge myself or others with my hidden riches. The name of the game is to separate your monthly expenses from these small savings. Separate what is necessary from the icing on the cake.

Becoming a Van Driver Can Be a Fun and Lucrative Career

posted on 6 May 2012 in Cars and Transport

If you have the right temperament, becoming a van driver can be a fun and lucrative career, especially if you have your own fleet and can set yourself up as an independent courier service. You might need to invest in ladder racks and other accessories, but that money can be made back. The good thing about becoming a professional van driver is that you do not have to have a commercial-endorsed driver's license. A regular driver's license is the only qualification that is necessary. Of course, if you plan to work for someone else, there is a good chance the hiring manager will require a background and motor vehicle check. This will certify that you do not have any criminal history and are free from moving violations and/or accidents. If you keep your record clean, you can have a successful career hauling materials to job sites, delivering small packages, or even driving senior citizens to doctor appointments. The career of a van driver is never dull, and if you decide to go into business for yourself, the overhead is low and the profit can be high. So don't discount the life of a van driver. It can be the type of career you are looking for.

DIY Jobs: the Repainting Headache

posted on 25 April 2012 in Home and Garden

Sometimes DIY projects simply go well, and everyone's happy. Our new juliette balconies are a prime example of a project done well. However, DIY can be a contentious issue sometimes. Take painting jobs. When walking into my house, I am simply overwhelmed by the peeling paint on the walls. It seemed only a year ago that we repainted the walls. Yet now the crumbling paint seems to suggest otherwise. There were random ink spots that couldn't be removed and long stretches where the paint has cracked. The solution? A repainting job, of course! Although seemingly a simple job, repainting the house is not going to be such a trivial task. The family can't agree on what color to paint each room. The fight over the color of the bathroom has ranged from orange to beige. The bathroom isn't the only room the family has bickered about. Each member has tried to convince each other that his color preference is the best. To be honest, we're simply overwhelmed by the wide variety of color choices available. In order to avoid more arguments, I have decided each room would simply be painted a neutral color: white. Now I have to tell my family members my decision.

My Client is Such a Clothes Horse!

posted on 24 April 2012 in Fashion

I have never seen someone so addicted to clothes and accessories until I took a small cleaning job for a woman in our neighborhood. When I went over one week she actually wanted me to clean and organize her closet. Of course I agreed. However I certainly had second thoughts when she opened the closet and I saw well over 30 purple handbags in there! There were different designers, shapes and sizes. I had never seen one person with so many bags in my entire life. I guess she noticed my surprise and chuckled a bit when she began pulling out the drawers underneath and there were matching shoes for each bag. We both had a little chuckle out of it and then I assured her I could handle it. So she went back to her office to work and I began to duct and organize the whole time wondering what one person needs with all of this. But if she likes it then I love it.

The Genre That Encourages Artwork by an Unknown Artist

posted on 24 April 2012 in Arts and Entertainment

Graffiti is an amazing expression of artwork by unknown artists. Although the artist may be known by their friends or other "gang members", they are obscure in the eyes of the people who see their work on a daily basis. Even the most famous graffiti artist - Banksy - is nothing but a name without a face. The unfortunate aspect of graffiti is that its beauty and creativity cannot be appreciated because of the fact that it is truly vandalism. If the artist could only find another medium for displaying their talent, perhaps they could put it to better use and avoid the law. Spray painting or drawing on the sides of buildings, vehicles, billboards or bridges is not the best way to show off their talents. Graffiti is an expression of talent by hidden, nameless people that haven't found a better outlet for their creativity. If they tried, perhaps they could become an illustrator or cartoonist for a magazine, book or website. They could design the next hit cartoon show on television or produce legitimate art that might sell for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Unless they find another way to express their creative side, their graffiti will continue to stand out as an eyesore from city to city until it is removed.

Talk About a Case of Extreme Forgetfulness

posted on 23 April 2012 in Uncategorised

Forgetting some log in details on several websites is not a rare occurrence especially for people like Stacy and me. I have been told several times that my forgetfulness is equivalent to that of someone who's in their old age. Although I think that is a bit of an overstatement I do believe there's some truth to it as I have noticed it myself. Say I put down my pen next to my laptop a few minutes after I'd be looking for it like a mad woman. So when I mentioned to Andy in passing or more likely amidst spoonfuls of cookies and cream ice cream about ebay forgot password process she looked at me for a full second then blinked and laughed out loud. You see I just did a password reset on eBay about a week or two ago and here I am forgetting what it was, is that crazy or what? I took her laughter in good stride and raised my hands in surrender while rolling my eyes. I know I should keep a little notebook of passwords but I keep forgetting on buying one.

Memories of Hot North Carolina Summers

posted on 22 April 2012 in Holiday and Travel

Now I live in a french farmhouse in my retirement, but I can well remember my days growing up in North Carolina. Growing up, summers were spent outside. I woke up early and ran to the neighbor's house to play in the backyard. There was a quick break for lunch, especially during the hottest part of the day, and the front porch was always a nice place to sit, or even under my friend's gazebo. We had a swing on the front porch and I would kick my legs to get it going in the afternoon. My mother would always bring me sweet tea and water to drink and all the neighborhood kids would play up and down the street. Hopscotch was my favorite but I was also pretty good at Jump Rope and Kickball. I loved wearing little sundresses and feeling the warm sun on my skin. To this day, nothing makes me feel better than a warm sunny day playing around outside. Now I go to a college in the mountains and the summers here are just as nice. I lay out on the pastures and read or a fly kites when a windy day comes.

RV Trip to Small Lake in Maine in 2006

posted on 19 April 2012 in Holiday and Travel

Having spent a long time looking at motorhomes for sale, we finally bought one, and went on a trip to a lake in Maine with my family in the summer of 2006. My family lives in central Pennsylvania so it took us about 10 hours to reach the lake. I drove for a few hours because my dad, the usual driver needed a nap. It was surprisingly easy to drive. Sitting 12 feet in the air with the huge windows made it really easy to stay in my lane. The biggest problem I had was keeping up with traffic. It is very hard to get such a large vehichle to accelerate. One time, at a toll both my dad saw a biker with his wife on the back. He offered her a beer. She accepted and chugged the whole think while still in line. That was funny! We finally got to the lake and had an amazing time relaxing and camping in the beautiful pine trees. My family and I were there about a week and had an uneventful trip back home to central Pennsylvania.

Nike Cross Trainer shoes are the Best Shoes In the World

posted on 18 April 2012 in Fashion

My black cross trainer shoes by Nike are the best shoes in the world. They are stylish (black with a red stripe) and unusually comfortable for a tennis shoe. I have tried others, and I must say that Nike has beaten them all. I first saw them by accident as I was shopping for cheap girls boots for my neice. I started running a couple of years ago on a regular basis. I tried out a couple of brands before a friend recommended the cross trainer shoes by Nike. I tried them on and tested them out in the park. I was convinced that this was the shoe for me. I tell anyone that is running to go out and get a pair of these shoes. They never regret it. In fact, many friends that thanked me for the recommendation. This is just how good they are. I have just about worn my original pair out, but that is okay. I have two more of the exact same shoes on reserve. I wanted to buy it just in case they stopped making that specific model.

The Challenges of Working and Selling Online

posted on 14 April 2012 in Home and Garden

In my career so far as a Web marketing, design and development professional, there have been several experiences which stand out both good and bad, but by far my all time favorite was working with a small startup to develop a push marketing, cross media application. I've helped companies with their online marketing - from those that sell folding dining tables to large blue chip companies. However, you know that you're on to something cutting edge when you feel like you are literally two or three days more knowledgeable than your client! Flying by the seat of your pants like that is a rewarding aspect of working in such a fast paced environment where new technologies and new ideas come essentially in real time, and your expertise has to shift immediately to keep pace with your customers' demands. This client was so ambitious, wanting to deliver to every new device and every new platform that we ended up working with multiple contractors. A situation like that could have ended in disaster because the requirements changed so often. Luckily, this was a rare client that was patient and willing to work with us.

Compounding Your Saving Against Inflation through Stocks

posted on 13 April 2012 in Business and Finance

I will save a portion of money as saving which I will call as the emergency fund. For such an emergency fund, it is best to be around 6-12 months of your expenses. With the current economy, you will never know what will happen to you and your job - your employer could be facing insolvency tomorrow after all. After having an emergency fund and spending what's needed, I will spend the rest on buying stock using Direct investment plan and dividend reinvestment plan. Why? Because the stock market has managed a return of 9% annually for the past 100 years despite the numerous crisis like World War 2, Great Depression and 2008 Subprime mortgage crisis. Investing in stock is about believing in the magic of compounding. For a $1000 to double in 7 years, one only needs a return of 10% as compared to 14%. This is certainly better than putting it in bank where the interest is much lower than the inflation rate, which means that your savings will get eroded slowly.

My Son's New Bracelet, a Stand Against Drugs

posted on 12 April 2012 in Construction and Industrial

My son came home from school the other day and I noticed he had a new bracelet on his wrist. It did not look normal, so I took his wrist and asked him about it. He told me his school had these adjustable velcro straps made with 'Say No to Drugs' printed on them. After I looked at them, they were pretty neat. Easy to open, close and waterproof. The school district is always very involved with drug awareness so I figured it was one of the projects they had going on at the school. What could I say, my 11 year ol d was promoting drug awareness and the fact that it is OK to say no. I just told him it looked cool and I was glad he was wearing it. That simple bracelet opened the door for me to be able to talk to my son about drugs and how to handle situations involving them. I would say the velcro straps served their purpose that day.

DIY Plans: My House is Inadequate

posted on 7 April 2012 in Home and Garden

I like my house, don't get me wrong. It is a typical three bedroom ranch on a hill with a finished basement and garage. So actually it is four bedrooms. It has a cute little porch off to the side of the kitchen. Sure, I'd love to start from scratch in an ideal world and build myself one of those self build houses, but that's just a dream, and I need to deal with reality. Now what I would change, is the kitchen. It is so small, there is only one counter across the back, with the sink in the middle. What I would like to do, is expand out either to the back or side, preferably to the side. I would install a two level island. One side would be for cooking and chopping. The other side would double as table with stools or a buffet for entertaining. After that I would install wrap around the wall counter tops, with a desk spot for my laptop. This way I can look up recipes in a clean safe spot, while preparing meals. Now, the other problem I have , is that there is only one bathroom. I would like to add a small bathroom downstairs with a small corner, or circular, shower. it would be located next to the back door for fast clean, after working in the yard, or to change to get in the pool. These are the two things I would change, if I had extra money. Thanks for listening!

Motocross Biking Is A Great Way to Spend the Weekend

posted on 7 April 2012 in Cars and Transport

One of my favorite ways to spend a weekend is going out on my motocross bike replete in my motocross clothing. It’s best to do this in the early morning, because that gives you all day to really traverse a large area and have fun with your friends. Even if you’re biking alone, you still get to test your ability against your personal best times, and try different terrain and even possibly different jumps and stunts! Stunts aren’t recommended for amateurs, but once you get to a certain point you’ll definitely want to step up your game, and take your speed and ability to the limit. Talk about an adrenaline rush! Motocross biking is all in all a great way to spend the afternoon because it’s that perfect combination of sport and fun. I’ve been doing it for a few years now, and every time I go out on the trail, I can’t wait to throw on my helmet and take out all of my frustrations on the track.
